The New York City Council unanimously supported the proposal

NOTORIOUS BIG and Wu-Tang Clan are to be honoured with street names in New York.

The hip hop legends will be memorialised with the public signage.

The decision to name the roads after the artists was a unanimous one made by New York City Council. It will see the late Christopher Wallace and the hip hop collective celebrated on the city’s streets.

As well as Biggie and Wu-Tang Clan, folk singer Woody Guthrie will receive the honour.

Christopher Wallace Way will be situated in Brooklyn, not just in the rapper’s neighbourhood but on the block that he grew up in, The Gothamist reported.

Wu-Tang Clan District will be located on Staten Island, where the group hails from.

LeRoy McCarthy, the local who campaigned for the street names, told NPR: "There's a certain sense of dismissal for hip hop historically... they think it's not worthy of being recognised of the recognition that you would give to classical music or jazz or rock and roll."

He told The Gothamist: "I'm happy that NYC officials are finally giving the city's indigenous hip hop music the respect and recognition that it deserves. It took a long time and lots of hard-work to advance the Christopher Wallace Way and Wu-Tang Clan District street co-naming, but ya know what, hip hop don't stop.

McCarthy has previously successfully petitioned to have a street in Queens co-named after A Tribe Called Quest’s Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor.

Biggie Smalls died in 1997 after he was hit in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. He was 24 years old. His killers have never been found.

Wu-Tang Clan most recently performed in the UK at music festival Lovebox. Their performance, a UK exclusive, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). They are set to perform two tour dates the US next month.
